Show the Mikki Pro Nail File to your pet, letting him smell and investigate it. Praise him and offer him a treat for calm behaviour. Next, turn it on and let it run, so your pet gets used to the noise and doesn’t become scared or anxious. Do this a few times, holding it away from your pet and slowly moving it closer without touching him, praising him in a calm, reassuring voice. When your pet is used to the noise and is comfortable with you turning it on and off; and moving it closer towards him, you can progress to filing the nails.
Place your pet on your lap or on a table with a non slip mat so they are comfortable and relaxed. You may want a family member to help you hold your pet for the first time, so you can concentrate on filing the nail (Fig. 1).
Start with one of your pet’s back paws and hold it upwards so you can file from the inside of the nail. Take your pet’s paw and gently place the claw in the opening of the clear cap. Apply gentle pressure so you can feel the Pro Nail File rubbing against the edge of the nail. Move the edge of the nail against the head so you get an even rounded finish – looking from time to time to see how you are progressing. Regularly check the pink area (nail quick) underneath the nail to ensure you do not remove too much of the nail (Fig.2).
Be patient and calm, doing a little at a time until your pet is used to the procedure. Start with one paw at a time and build up the amount of time you spend filing your pet’s nails as he relaxes and starts to enjoy his pampering session.
Throughout your grooming session, praise your pet in a calm voice and when you have completed his pedicure give him a treat. Remove the head of the Pro Nail File by twisting the lid or pushing it upwards. Wash the head in warm water to clear all nail dust and debris, so it is ready for use next time.
Note. For really long nails, cut using a Mikki Nail Clipper and then use the Pro Nail File to smooth and shape the nail.
